A McDonald’s spokesperson has confirmed that it is just that—a rumor—and the breakfast item will not be returning.
McDonald’s has built a breakfast menu stacked with all-time greats: the extra-crispy hash browns, hearty biscuits and gravy, and the chef-favorite Egg McMuffin.
But sitting at the top of the morning meal hierarchy is the undisputed fan favorite: the McGriddle. This sweet-and-savory offering created a breakfast sandwich league of its own, so the only thing that could dethrone it is, well, itself. Which is why a recent rumor that McDonald’s might be on the verge of bringing back its Blueberry McGriddle captured the Internet—even Allrecipes reported on the leak, excited by the possibility of this fan favorite’s return. Unfortunately, it turns out it was just that: a rumor.
McDonald’s Isn’t Bringing Back the Blueberry McGriddle
A supposedly leaked social media post claimed that McDonald’s was quietly testing the Blueberry McGriddle, a sandwich that combines all the signature fixings—sausage, bacon, egg, and cheese—stacked between blueberry-infused griddle cakes.
Naturally, fans were freaking out. “Please, I beg. I would get up early for this,” one Redditor wrote. “Right? There’s absolutely no doubt that thing is absolutely amazing,” added another.
The Blueberry McGriddle was originally tested back in 2019 at over 100 locations in the Washington, D.C. area. At the time, McDonald’s USA Culinary Innovation spokesperson Carol Martino described it like this:
“The Blueberry McGriddles breakfast sandwich will satisfy both the sweet and savory senses. The flavors from the real blueberries balanced with the sweet taste of maple reminds me of the blueberry pancakes my mother used to make for us growing up. Imagine that combined with your choice of sizzling breakfast sausage or thick-cut bacon nestled under a creamy slice of American cheese and fluffy egg. It’s everything you love about breakfast in one sandwich.”
Despite the praise, the blueberry-studded sandwich never made it past the testing phase. A McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed with Allrecipes on June 4 that there is no ongoing test, and that the sandwich hasn’t been in circulation since 2019.
This comes as disappointing news to all the fans of the sandwich, with many saying McDonald’s doesn’t even need to bother testing it, because it “would be pure heaven.” After all, it’s a flavor combo that seems to be working just fine over at Bojangles, where Bo’Berry Biscuits remain a fan favorite.
Some fans are even dreaming of the next McGriddle twist—like chocolate chip. “They need a choco chip one fr, I’d buy it,” one user said. “Chocolate chips instead of blueberries would send some family members over,” added another.
So while it turns out the returning test of the Blueberry McGriddle was just a rumor after all, we’re crossing our fingers that McDonald’s takes the hint and brings it back sometime soon. In the meantime, at least we know for sure that the Snack Wrap is (finally!) returning.
