Grilled cheese lovers, get ready for a game-changer, as a chef has just dished out an insider trick to elevate your sandwich game. It’s no secret that a crunchy grilled sandwich oozing with flavor can bring simple joy, but achieving the perfect balance of crispiness and melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness isn’t always easy; however, luckily for us, Kitchen Door Food on TikTok has dropped a hot tip for creating the ultimate grilled cheese.

To make yours taste better, it turns out you need to ditch the butter, as an other ingredient in your fridge could be the answer to enhancing the flavor of your sandwich. In a video making waves among foodies, a chef shared the recipe, stating: “The secret to the best grilled cheese is that you need to put mayonnaise on the outside instead of butter, and the reason why is because mayonnaise is made with oil, eggs and vinegar.

“So the oil has a higher smoke point than butter, which will allow you to get the bread crispier slower. So the oil has a higher smoke point, so you can make it crispier and delicious.

“The egg and the vinegar – that just helps with flavor, and also just crispiness. And, if you want to be cheeky, throw a little sliced cheese in there for ooey, gooey meltiness.”

The video has garnered multiple views since its posting, igniting a cheesy revolution among foodies and their grilled cheese sandwiches.

Thrilled home chefs are raving about the technique with gushing reviews all over the internet.

One happy user declared: “I just tried this, and it is the only way I will make grilled cheese from now on.”

Yet another enthusiast exclaimed: “Made this and it’s so good.” A third added: “Mayo on the outside, yes ma’am!”

Meanwhile, a fourth also wrote: “As someone who hates mayo, this is the only way to make grilled cheese. It adds another depth of flavor and is so crunchy.”

Why should I swap butter?

Southern Living touts mayonnaise as a next-level enhancer for the classic comfort food. Perfecting that balance of crispy crust against a molten core can be quite the culinary hurdle.

Southern Living advises: “How do you avoid a barely toasted cheese melt or burnt sandwich with still-cold cheddar? This often means going low and slow with the heat, and mayonnaise can quicken this process.

“Unlike butter, which burns quickly, mayonnaise is an oil-based fat with a higher smoke point. This means you can crank up the heat without fear of charred bread, ensuring a sublime golden brown crunch every time.

“Beyond its time-saving properties, using mayo is also more convenient than a stick of butter, as it is already smooth and spreadable (crucial if you’re using soft, white bread). Plus, you also can get away with using less to accomplish the same job as butter.”

Sometimes, butter can seem a bit too indulgent, potentially drowning out the cheese’s flavor. On the flip side, mayonnaise brings a lighter touch and a tangy kick that might just wake your tastebuds up a tad more.
