What’s the best summer recipe in Mississippi?
According to food.com, the best summer dish for the state is a Mississippi Mud Pie.
A no-bake recipe is ideal for the hottest months, but some versions require baking. The traditional dessert layers chocolate and whipped topping or cream into a crust. (Some have a hint of coffee.)
Food.com editors picked a submission by TishT for Amazing Mississippi Mud Cake. This one is distinctive because it features a cream cheese and sugar layer, along with butterscotch pudding, in addition to the usual chocolate.
Southern Living, however, triples down on the chocolate, starting with an Oreo cookie crust, a layer of brownies, topped by pudding and capped with a cream layer.
Every family makes theirs differently, and the recipe is easy to customize.
Why is it called Mississippi Mud Pie?
The sweet treat is thought to have been created in Mississippi, and the dense chocolate layer looks like the mud dredged up from the Mississippi River.

“Any good foodie must-eat list has to include the state’s signature dessert: Mississippi Mud Pie. Perhaps no two families make it exactly the same, but the main idea is this: a gooey chocolate sauce glazed over melted marshmallows and a crusty brownie base. The Chimneys in Gulfport calls it Mississippi Mud Cake, and you can enjoy it while you’re taking in the restaurant’s lush green surroundings and waterfront views,” Visit Mississippi wrote.
