If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you hand three kids (ages 9, 7 and 3), a giant slice of watermelon and an unlimited supply of toppings, let me tell you: it’s a recipe for sticky hands, giggles and surprisingly edible art. On a sweltering summer afternoon, I decided to host our very own Watermelon Pizza Party. Spoiler alert: my kitchen may never recover, but my heart (and my kids’ bellies) are full.
Ingredients
- 1 large round slice of seedless watermelon (about 1-inch thick)
- 1 cup Greek yogurt or dairy-free yogurt
- Assorted fresh fruit (berries, kiwi, grapes, mango, etc.)
- Shredded coconut
- Mini chocolate chips
- Granola
- Honey or agave syrup (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the watermelon base
- Cut a thick, round slice from the center of the watermelon.
- Pat dry with a paper towel.
- Place on a large cutting board or platter.
- Slice into “pizza” wedges
- Using a sharp knife (adult job), cut the watermelon round into 6–8 wedges, like pizza slices.
- Spread the “sauce”
- Have kids spread a layer of yogurt over each slice, leaving a little border for the “crust.”
- Add toppings
- Let kids decorate their slices with fruit, coconut, chocolate chips and granola.
- Drizzle with honey or agave if desired.
- Serve & enjoy
- Eat immediately for a cool, juicy treat!
Tips for success
- Use small bowls for toppings to make decorating easy.
- For a party, set up a “pizza bar” so everyone can customize their own.
- Try cookie cutters for fun fruit shapes.
