It’s a tale as old as time: buy a store-bought food, add a few extra ingredients, and transform it into something worthy of a restaurant (or, at least, your Instagram followers). Ina Garten is the queen of incorporating store-bought items into her recipes, and the latest makes for a delightful and refreshing summer dessert.
The Barefoot Contessa has a special trick to make her vanilla ice cream less boring — less vanilla, if you will — and we can’t wait to try it. TODAY shared the three-ingredient recipe, which calls for your favorite brand of vanilla ice cream. Add two scoops to a bowl and drizzle with Limoncello liqueur.
According to Food Network, “Limoncello is a lemon-flavored liqueur from Southern Italy that’s famously served cold as an after-dinner digestive, but can also be used as an ingredient in cocktails and desserts.”
The citrus liqueur can also be made with lemon zest, vodka or grain alcohol, sugar, and a few weeks of aging.
The final piece for Garten’s ice cream dessert? One biscotti that “gives the treat a pleasant crunch,” per TODAY. Biscottis are classic Italian cookies, which are crisp and made to dip in coffee (or served with ice cream!), per The Biscotti Company.
With Ina Garten’s tips, you can make this Italian-inspired dessert with just a short trip to the grocery store — and you’ll never want plain vanilla ice cream the same way again.
If vanilla isn’t your thing, Garten also has plenty of other ice cream hacks, such as coffee chocolate chip ice cream that she scoops inside two cookies and rolls in toffee bits for extra crunch. Try one of these and your sweet tooth will thank you.
