Free smoothies. Discounts on custard. Free cookies.

A trifecta of free and discount offerings around metro Detroit is happening this week. Here’s what is to know:

Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

One of the most popular credits for creating the beloved chocolate chip cookie is Ruth Graves Wakefield. One day in the late 1930s, Wakefield, one story goes, ran out of baker’s chocolate for a cookie recipe. And instead, Wakefield, who was chef and owner, along with her husband, of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, used semi-sweet chocolate, according to nationaldaycalendar.com, and eventually the Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie was born.

Here are a few deals on chocolate chip cookies in metro Detroit:

  • DoubleTree by Hilton: The hotel is known for its signature, warm chocolate chip cookies that it welcomes hotel guests with. Each year, the hotel chain says, more than 20 million DoubleTree by Hilton cookies are consumed and more than 1.2 million chocolate chips are used to make them. On National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, you can stop in any of the chain’s nearly 400 U.S. hotels and get a free cookie. No hotel reservation is needed. An allergy-friendly version is also available.
  • Insomnia Cookies: Free chocolate chunk cookie with any purchase. The offer is available in store and for delivery orders, according to Insomnia Cookies’ Instagram page.
