Don’t mess with a good thing, and one Indiana restaurant hasn’t stopped serving delicious burgers for over 100 years.
You know the age-old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” That’s how I feel about a good cheeseburger. There’s something classic and delicious about a burger that’s done right. To me, that’s a smash burger with cheese, mayo, lettuce, onion, pickle, ketchup, and mustard. A perfect American classic right there!
One restaurant in Indiana has really taken that phrase to heart, as they found their delicious smash burgers were a hit, so for more than a cneturey they’ve been serving them up in Indianapolis.
Recently, a video came across my Instagram from a user named @SnackEatingSnackss, and the video started with him holding up a delicious-looking smash burger while talking about how the burger is over 100 years old (no, not the actual burger in his hands, the recipe) so I instantly had to know more.
The burger showcased in the video is from a historic restaurant in Indianapolis, The Workingman’s Friend. I don’t know how I’ve been a Hoosier my whole life and have never tried The Workingman’s Friend, but now I definitely need to.

The location may not be the original, but the ownership and recipes are! According to Indianapolis Monthly, The Workingman’s Friend has been serving delicious food since 1918. The restaurant was founded by Louis Stamatkin, who began the restaurant to feed local railroad workers. More than a century later, people still flock to The Workingman’s Friend to enjoy their classic menu and retro feel. The restaurant is now owned by the granddaughter of Louis, Becky Stmatkin, which I think is super cool!
