The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for frozen pizza sold at Trader Joe’s because it was sold without the “benefit of import reinspection.” The Trader Joe’s Uncured Pepperoni Pizza was imported from Italy, but “not presented for FSIS import reinspection.”
The import reinspection is required by the USDA after border inspection and animal and plant health inspection. During this inspection, FSIS ensures the products are properly certified, then examines the shipment for “general condition and labeling.”
How To Identify the Impacted Trader Joe’s Pizza
The TJ’s pizzas were sold at retail locations in California and can be identified by the following information:
- “Trader Joe’s Uncured Pepperoni Pizza Product of Italy” with MFG lot 06/16/25 and best-by date 08/16/26 or MFG lot 06/21/25 and best-by date 8/21/26
The box also includes the Italy establishment number “IT 1558 L UE” inside the Italian mark of inspection on the front of the package. FSIS has label images on its site to help identify the pizzas.
What To Do if You Have the Impacted Trader Joe’s Pizza
FSIS has not issued a recall because the product is no longer being sold at Trader Joe’s stores. However, if you have the pizza in your freezer, you should not consume it. Instead, throw the frozen pizza away or return it to Trader Joe’s for a refund.
At this time, no illnesses or adverse effects have been reported from eating the pizza. For any questions regarding the health alert, contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at: 626-599-3817.
