Is Beefy Boys at Oxford Westgate the best place for burgers?

Written by

The Beefy Boys started out as a drunken idea, between four mates cooking a barbecue in the back garden.

After they entered a competition in Las Vegas and won, the food was put into a business and the rest is history.

Having started out in Herefordshire, The Beefy Boys now has restaurants in Hereford, Cheltenham, Shrewsbury, Bath and now at the Westgate in Oxford.

But what makes The Beefy Boys a cut above the rest is the beef they use, sourced locally to them at a farm in Herefordshire.

Two cuts of the cattle chuck and brisket, are both dry-aged. This is then minced every day by a butcher named Neil.

And the business sources its semi-brioche buns from the Cotswolds, using organic flour and no preservatives.

Forget your McDonald’s or your Burger King. They’re for people who want a quick fix with zero thrills.

What The Beefy Boys can do – and I don’t know if this was their intention – was shake off any regrets you may have about tucking into one of their burgers.

We tried an Oklahoma onion boy – two mustard fried 3oz burgers with double American cheese and, of course, onions – and the American boy – double American cheese, gherkin, onion and bacon.

On the side, it had to be chips. This time topped with a healthy dose of parmesan.

When the burger is cooked, the ‘patties’ are placed with cheese inside a bun lid. Water is sprayed on the griddle to create steam inside.

As a result, the burgers arrive on your table with melted cheese and a warm, soft bun.

You don’t have to be a food critic to agree with me on this one: their burgers are next level delicious.

The stunning burger was washed down with a couple of cocktails: the Beefy Boy’s signature Backyard Punch (consisting of lots of types of rum) and a Key Lime Pie Martini (an elegant, liquid cheesecake in a glass).

Pudding topped this meal off, as well as me and my partner, with a chocolate brownie serviced with ice cream and a sundae.

I’ve never had a sundae, so can’t compare it to others, but I can say it was a glass-full of perfection.

But regrettably I couldn’t finish it. We’d both reached our full capacity.

The Beefy Boys had proven firstly, what a great business and recipe they have, but also that you can’t regret a dirty burger.

Not bad for a drunken idea.
