For someone who’s not a chef, Selena Gomez is leaving a rather distinguished culinary footprint.
On Sept. 9, the multi-hyphenate appeared on “Good Hang,” a podcast hosted by Amy Poehler where celebrities and “fun people” sit down for interviews with the “SNL” alumna.
During Gomez’s hang, the “Only Murders in the Building” star dished on her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, her billion-dollar makeup brand Rare Beauty and a fact that she finds startling: that people assume she is a chef because of her HBO Max show “Selena + Chef.”
“I love when people say you are a chef because you had a cooking show,” Gomez said. “The idea and the concept of the show is that I simply don’t know how. And I think over a few seasons, it’s safe to say I still don’t know how, because it was incredible recipes that were so intricate.”
Gomez added that while the tasks were “challenging” — episodes frequently showed her making mistakes on her own in the kitchen — they were also “fun.”
“I’d get it right, but it would take me five to seven hours to do it,” she explained.
Poehler then asked the “Wizards of Waverly Place” star a follow-up question: “What’s a meal that you know to cook and you cook?”
“Oh, my nana’s chicken and dumplings,” Gomez replied without hesitation.
“It’s a very Southern dish. It’s very good,” she added, explaining that the recipe contains biscuits, shredded chicken and soup. “It’s the best cozy weather dish. It’s so fun.”
Another warm and comfy cooking image Gomez stirred up is the quality time she spends at home with her fiancé Benny Blanco, a Grammy-winning producer and home cook who published “Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends,” in 2024.
“I don’t know if he’d admit this, but he likes when I sit in the kitchen with him, because he tells me what he’s doing, and I think it’s the cutest thing in the world, because I’ll sit there and I’m just like, ‘Now what?’” Gomez said, adding that he “completely loses himself in cooking.”
She said Blanco also enjoys tweaking recipes to make them better, which she finds “so endearing.”
