4 Food Recalls You Need To Know About This Week

This week brought a surge of food recalls, from undeclared ingredients turning up in packaged foods and beverages to frozen and deli items contaminated with listeria. Here’s a list of products to take a second look at today.

Aldi Spring Rolls Recalled For Allergen Risk 

On October 8, Tai Foong USA recalled its Fusia Asian Inspirations Veggie Spring Rolls, which were distributed to Aldi stores in 40 states. Tai Foong announced the recall after discovering that its shrimp spring rolls were put in packages labeled “Vegetable Spring Rolls.”

It’s not fun to open a package and find something other than what you bought. This could pose a real health risk, too. If someone with a shellfish allergy unknowingly eats the shrimp spring rolls, they could have a life-threatening reaction.

As of October 9, Aldi has removed the affected product from its stores. However, this frozen food could still be in your freezer. Here’s how to identify the now-recalled spring rolls.

Frozen Spinach Recalled for Listeria Contamination 

On October 6, Sno Pac Foods issued a recall for its Sno Pac Organic Frozen Cut Spinach after the spinach tested positive for listeria. It’s unclear which retailers sold the affected product, but regional grocers such as Hy-Vee, Fresh Thyme, and Living Fresh Market may have carried it.

While Sno Pac Foods has since halted production of the product, it’s recommended that you double-check any frozen spinach in your freezer. It could be dangerous for you and your family because listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that may be life-threatening for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may experience milder symptoms often associated with food poisoning, such as fever, headache, nausea, and diarrhea.

Search for these label details on the spinach in your freezer.

If you have this spinach, toss it immediately, as listeria can survive and grow in cold temperatures. If you think you may have eaten the frozen spinach, monitor for symptoms—signs of listeria can take up to two weeks to appear. (Reach out to your healthcare provider if you’re at all concerned.) Either way, you’re eligible for a refund, so be sure to contact the store you bought it from.

Deli Pasta Salads Recalled for Listeria Risk

On October 4, Kroger pulled two ready-to-eat pasta salads from its deli case. Its supplier alerted the grocer that Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad contained an ingredient that tested positive for listeria. This recall is connected to several others all tied to the same deadly listeria outbreak.

Both pasta salads were found in the deli section at 1,860 Kroger store locations under the following brands: Kroger, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Payless, Ralphs, and Smith’s.

This recall spans 28 states, including Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.

“Diet” Lipton Green Tea Citrus Recalled for Containing Sugar

On October 2, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified a PepsiCo recall from September 17 as Class II, meaning drinking the beverage “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” per the agency.

12-packs of Lipton Green Tea Citrus were mispackaged. Each outer case label says “Lipton Green Tea Citrus,” while the individual bottles say “Lipton Diet Green Tea Mixed Berry .”

The flavor is listed correctly on the case but incorrectly on the individual bottles. The label on the bottles is for a diet product with 0 grams of sugar, but the beverage actually contains 25 grams of sugar. In other words, you think you’re drinking a bottle of Lipton Diet Green Tea Mixed Berry, but it’s actually full-sugar Lipton Green Tea Citrus.

This labeling mix-up could pose a real health risk for those with health conditions like diabetes, who routinely monitor their daily sugar intake to help prevent potentially dangerous blood sugar (glucose) spikes.
