An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but when it comes to consumption, they aren’t as popular as you may think. Even though they are, in fact, one of the most purchased fruits in the states, they aren’t among the most popular. You’d think an everyday fruit like bananas, strawberries, or apples would likely take the top spot, but think again. According to a recent analysis conducted by Gourmet Gift Baskets, the most popular fruit in America is actually a tropical favorite—mango.
The report analyzed fruit search demand and signals across every state in America using Google Keyword Planner and then ranked the top five fruits by state, analyzing the favorites, top-rising, and most seasonal fruits in each. Surprisingly, mango ranked in first place across 40 different states, followed by bananas, which took the lead in seven.

Mango just so happens to be my all-time favorite fruit, but due to its seasonality, it was definitely surprising to discover it’s the most popular here in America—especially since it’s much more fresh in other parts of the world. Luckily, the report also looked into seasonality, which was calculated as the difference between the maximum and minimum monthly search volume for each fruit-state pairing. As it turns out, grapes happened to be the fruit with the biggest difference between their monthly high and low searches in the majority of states, followed by strawberries and then melons.
Honestly, I’m shocked by these results as a whole. I’m going to have to rethink my next trip to the produce aisle.
