Costco’s New Controversial Steakhouse Wedge Salad Kit

Written by

Salad is one of those side dishes that is usually far from controversial. Sure, you can get a bit wacky with your toppings, but the whole idea of a salad is to be light, refreshing, crunchy, and good for you, and for the most part, most salads tick all those boxes. But there’s a new salad kit at Costco that is causing a bit of chaos on Instagram. People in the comments are fighting over whether this wedge salad is worth the price, and the war seems to only be picking up steam rather than slowing down.

“There’s a brand new Steakhouse Wedge Salad at Costco,” Laura from Costco Hot Finds on Instagram said in a recent video. “It comes with everything you need for the best salad, including crispy onions. It also comes with bacon crumbles. I pop those in the microwave to get them extra crispy. This was so crunchy, and so, so good.”

It also comes with grape tomatoes, blue cheese dressing, and blue cheese crumbles to add to each serving. The entire kit, which comes with four wedges of mini iceberg lettuce, is just over $7 per pound — which, according to some, is blasphemous.

“Ain’t no way way people are really buying a wedge of lettuce smh,” one person commented on Laura’s post. Another person said, “You can make that yourself for a fraction of the price.”

“I thought it looked silly when I saw it in the warehouse. My thoughts were confirmed upon watching this Reel,” someone else commented. The price of the salad does feel a bit like a bait-and-switch, truth be told. You can see in Laura’s video that the wedge salad kit she picked up was actually just over $17 because it came with over two pounds of food. But…you do get four servings, making each serving cost less than $5. That lessens the blow of the price tag a bit … right?

“You can make everything from scratch for cheaper, yet restaurants are still in business, and prepackaged foods exist. It’s almost like people will pay for convenience or something???” another commenter wrote. True! And there are plenty of people who are willing to pay for the convenience of the kit rather than the raw ingredients. If bought separately, the lettuce, bacon, onion crisps, blue cheese, and dressing might amount to around $17 anyway!

“I literally just had this for lunch. Great minds,” one person said. Another added, “Love a good wedge salad and how convenient!! I’ll be picking this up today.” And someone else who tried it reported back that “it’s delicious.”

To each their own when it comes to this wedge salad kit from Costco. Will you be giving it a go or boycotting it and picking up your own ingredients to make salads from scratch?
