The Pioneer Woman’s latest recipe is “so amazing” in taste, but even better for home chefs on a rush — how easy it is to whip together! Ree Drummond shared her go-to cookout dessert recipe that includes store-bought ingredients to make baking a breeze without sacrificing taste one bit.
In a video on Food Network’s YouTube Channel, Drummond starts by spreading a can of blueberry pie filling in a baking dish, with a few fresh blueberries thrown in. Next, a box cake mix goes in, which is a critical part of dump cakes. She uses a vanilla cake mix, although Drummond encourages you to switch it up to add some variety in your recipes.
Although it goes against instinct, Drummond recommends not mixing it. Simply spread the dry mix over the top of the blueberry. Next, butter.
“The beauty of any dump cake is this layer of butter on top,” Drummond continues, placing 12 tablespoons of butter on top of the cake mix. Leave as is, then add more blueberries, again not mixing.
Grab a bowl to mix the crisp layer that goes on top. Flour, brown sugar, and other ingredients go in. Cut the mixture together with a pastry cutter, then pour the crumbly topping on top of the baking dish with blueberries. It bakes for 45 minutes, then sits and cools for a while after it’s done to “let it settle in” and “thicken” the filling, according to Drummond.
When you’re ready to serve, scoop it up and serve with whipped cream or ice cream on the side. “I love the texture, I love the flavor, I love that it’s just slightly warm, so delicious and just very vintage,” she says.
People were loving it in the comments as well. “This looks absolutely delicious 😊❤,” one person said. Another wrote, “This is a winner! 👏👏👏👏”
Someone else posted a variation of the dessert that sounds just as good. “I grew up making this with 1 can of cherry 🍒 pie filling and 1 can of crushed pineapple 🍍 (undrained) , then used a yellow cake mix,” they wrote. “We used the same amount of butter, and it was so rich and delicious. It was great with Whip cream, or ice cream. I’m always happy to find recipes for different varieties of fruits and cake mixes to combine. 😃” Honestly, that would be amazing too!
