When it comes to nostalgia, we’re all in. Whether it’s in the form of fun, limited-edition throwback packaging, the return of a beloved menu item at a restaurant, or an old-school recipe that gets rediscovered in the age of social media, we love it all. One unique bread recipe that home cooks are getting reacquainted with? Ice cream bread.

Ice cream bread is made of—you guessed it—ice cream, with a lift from self-rising flour. (It can also be made with a combination of all-purpose flour and baking powder.) Mix the melted ice cream with the self-rising flour, toss it in a lined loaf pan, bake it, and you’re left with a surprisingly tender, lightly sweet bread.
Recipes for ice cream bread are widely available on the internet (in fact, we’ve got a recipe or two ourselves), but social media videos have helped introduce the bread to even more people. A couple years ago, TikTok user B. Dylan Hollis found an ice cream bread recipe in a 1978 cookbook and re-created it on a TikTok video that’s been seen by more than 20 million viewers. Since then, even more TikTok users have been trying the simple bread recipe.
Tips for Making Ice Cream Bread
-
You can use any flavor of ice cream, though vanilla will give you the most neutral flavor. According to Allrecipes user Selma Wood, “I used butter pecan ice cream, added a dab of vanilla and sprinkled with cinnamon on top. Delicious! Will definitely make again.” Just be sure to not use low-fat or sugar-free ice cream, as the recipe will not work.

If you don’t have self-rising flour on hand, Allrecipes member Margaret recommends an easy switch: “I didn’t have any self-rising flour, so I substituted it with 1½ cups of flour combined with 2¼ tsp baking soda and ⅜ tsp salt.”
