Popular natural pet food brand, Blue Buffalo, announced today, Oct. 21, that it is entering the $3 billion fresh pet food category with two new fresh dog food products. Love Made Fresh is the latest Blue Buffalo category, featuring refrigerated slice-and-serve rolls and scoop-and-serve tubs. Each product comes in four different types: beef recipe for adult dogs, chicken recipe for adult dogs, beef recipe for small adult dogs, and chicken recipe for small adult dogs. The new products are meant to be served with kibble—or whatever else you’re currently feeding your doggo—or as a solo meal.
“At the heart of Love Made Fresh is a simple truth: There are countless ways pet parents show love for their dogs, and we believe mealtime should live up to that same level of care,” said Nicole Ayers, business unit director for growth accelerators, North America Pet, General Mills, in a press release from the company. “Love Made Fresh helps pet parents turn everyday feeding moments into fresh acts of love. We’re excited to extend our legacy of loving pets like family and feeding pets like family with our entry to the fresh pet food category.”
The products are currently available at all retail locations where Blue Buffalo is already sold. The product doesn’t have any artificial flavors, preservatives or by-product meals. It’s never been a better time to be a dog when it comes to the quality and quantity of food available for our furry friends. Blue Buffalo enters a crowded market already dominated by numerous companies and brands offering fresh ingredient dog food. Some of the most popular ones include The Farmer’s Dog, Just Food For Dogs, Ollie, Pet Plate, Freshpet, Nom Nom, among others.

Picking the Right Fresh Ingredient Dog Food
With so many options available, narrowing it down can be tough. We’ve got a few recommendations. First, let’s go through some of the ingredients to look out for (both good and bad). Like humans, dogs generally need proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats and calcium. For proteins, look for ground beef, turkey or chicken. Organ meats are also a good option. For carbohydrates, we recommend looking for ingredients like brown rice and oatmeal.
Carrots, broccoli, spinach and sweet potatoes are the top vegetables we recommend. Omega-3 fatty acids are also ingredients to look for. These usually come in the form of fish oil.
Once you’ve generally found products with the best ingredients for your doggo, it’s essential to find the type of food they prefer. This might take some experimenting. We recommend getting smaller samples or sizes of different brands and flavors until you see what your dog prefers. Make sure you’re also considering your budget. Dog foods—especially those made with fresh ingredients—can be pricey. Make sure you find something sustainable for you and your dog.
Lastly, consider some homemade recipes. We’ve got plenty of examples. During the last two years of my Bernese mountain dog’s life, I only cooked him homemade meals. He loved it, and it improved his quality of life.
