The best recipes are always the ones passed down from generation to generation. Case in point: my grandma’s famous beef and noodles — and an old-fashioned dessert recipe from Martha Stewart that’ll have you rethinking what you’re bringing to the Thanksgiving this year. Sorry, I’m not sharing the recipe for my grandma’s entrée, but Stewart is dishing on the traditional sweet that definitely deserves a spot at your family’s gathering.
“Allow us to introduce you to the apple pandowdy: a cross between a pie and cobbler, a pandowdy is an easy, traditional American dessert from the 19th century that deserves a place on the Thanksgiving table,” Stewart wrote on Instagram.

“Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or cinnamon whipped cream,” she added.
I am salivating over that description because what?! It sounds delectable — and the perfect dish to break up the pie table.
In the Apple Pandowdy recipe video, which Stewart also shared on her website, Stewart begins by peeling and slicing apples first, then squeezing fresh lemon juice on top. She adds more ingredients to the apple part, including one “surprise ingredient” molasses.
“I love molasses, and it has an unusual flavor, old-fashioned flavor,” she explained. Pour the apples into a square baking dish and start working on the pastry part. Roll out the dough, then put it on top of the apple mixture, tucking in the sides and cutting a few slits on top.
Bake it, then dig into the golden brown, flaky, warm dish! Your Thanksgiving guests won’t know what hit them with this tasty treat.
