One food creator shared an easy hack to make your sweet potato fries extra crispy – and it’s a step you’d never have thought to do before
If you’re grappling with soft, sweet potato fries and craving that elusive crunch, a food influencer has divulged a nifty trick to ensure they come out extra crispy. TikToker Tom, better known as Pinch of Mint, recently unveiled his unique spin on the classic sweet potato fry.
These aren’t your garden-variety fries. To obtain that crunchy texture, Tom incorporates a key step into the cooking regimen that promises an irresistible crunch. In his video, Tom said: “These mashed potato fries, they’re insane! Man, they’re good.”
The game-changing move? Simply mash the sweet potatoes post-boiling, reports the Express. Tom goes beyond the standard par-coiling step prior to frying; he mashes the sweet potatoes and enriches them with a host of ingredients to elevate the taste.
He stirs in grated cheddar, garlic, and a generous sprinkling of seasonings to the mix. The recipe is flexible, allowing for flavour tweaks to meet personal tastes. After preparing the concoction, transfer it to a piping bag.
Piping out small strips of the mix means achieving that coveted crispiness during the deep-frying stage. Tom added, “If you love fries, then try these mashed potato fries.”
This inventive twist on fries sparked mixed reactions among Pinch of Mint’s audience, with some eager to sample this creation. Adele commented: “They look awesome and gluten-free. I’ll be making these.”
Dylan tossed in a suggestion, saying, “Stick in a wee bit onion n it’s hash brown fries,” and another follower wrote, “This is so extra but best believe I’m doing this.”
While Dale commented, “Got about 10 chips out of my mix as they broke up in the oil.”
If you’re keen on giving these crunchy sweet potato fries a whirl, here’s the scoop on what you’ll need to whip them up.
Mashed Potato Fries
Ingredients
- 500g of potatoes
- 60g of cheddar cheese, grated
- Two garlic cloves, crushed
- 4g of salt
- Good grind of black pepper
- 60g of cornflour
- 4g of paprika
- 2g of dried oregano
- Oil, for deep frying
Method
Start by peeling and chopping the potato into small pieces. Immerse the potato chunks in a pot of salted cold water and bring to a boil.
Let it cook for a hearty 20 minutes or until the potato has completely softened.
Then, drain the potatoes and proceed to mash them before introducing grated cheese, crushed garlic, salt, black pepper, cornflour, paprika, and dried oregano into the mix. Stir until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Transfer the mixture into a piping bag and meticulously pipe out slender strips that mimic the size of fries onto a wooden board or sheet of parchment paper.
Crank your oil temperature up to 180°C and fry the strips in groups until they reach a golden, crispy perfection—this typically takes around two minutes. Dish it out and savour every bite.
