For those looking to elevate their cheese toastie game, chef James Lamprey suggests a unique twist on the classic method. In his TikTok video, James, known for his “fun and interesting recipes” on social media, shares a tip that could change the way you make grilled cheese sandwiches.

He advises: “I’m going to teach you a cooking hack that will help you make grilled cheese sandwiches.

“Firstly, use mayonnaise, not butter, to spread on your bread. This is going to help it cook perfectly without burning the toast. Now this is the easy part, put the mayonnaise side down and add your cheese. Put your other bread on top.”

James then recommends an unconventional technique for flipping the sandwich, which avoids the messiness of using a spatula.

He explains: “When it’s time to flip, you don’t want to do this [flip the sandwich] because it makes a mess. Instead what you want to do is scoop under it, hold it steady, turn the pan upside down, place it in there, and then slowly put it back.

This way it doesn’t fall all over the place and you have a perfect crust”, reports the Daily Record.

The response to his culinary hack has been positive, with one viewer saying: “I’ve been doing this for so long it’s the best way to make a grilled cheese.”

Another user agreed, adding: “He knows how to make a grilled cheese.”

A third user chimed in: “The mayo – great tip! I loved it, thanks!”

However, not everyone agreed with his advice about flipping the pan over instead of simply turning the sandwich, with one person remarking: “Or you could just use two spatulas.”

Another individual noted: “I found that putting a lid on helps melt the cheese so you can just flip it normally.”

While another added their two pence: “Nobody is putting the pan upside down.”

One more person wittily commented: “For the flip tip, all the crumbs will fall onto the stove then.”

Finally, a user added: “I’ve literally flipped them the first way my whole life, none ever fell apart because I let the cheese melt BEFORE flipping it.”
