Ingredients
For the Sugar Cookies
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Zest of 1 lime
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 1/2 cups flour
For the Lime Buttercream
- 1 cup butter, softened
- Zest of 1 lime
- 2 teaspoons lime juice
- Zest of 1/2 lemon
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
For the Passion Fruit Topping
- 1 jar passion fruit dessert sauce (such as Torani, Bonne Maman, or homemade
Instructions
1. Make the Sugar Cookies
- Preheat oven to 350F (175C).
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in the sour cream, vanilla extract, and lime zest.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Scoop dough into balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- For a rustic look: Bake as is.
- For perfect shapes: Chill dough for 1–2 hours, then roll and cut with cookie cutters.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are set but not browned. Cool completely.
2. Make the Lime Buttercream
- In a large bowl, beat butter until smooth.
- Add lime zest, lime juice, lemon zest, and vanilla extract, mixing until incorporated.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until fluffy and spreadable.
3. Assemble the Cookies
- Frost each cooled cookie generously with lime buttercream.
- Place cookies in the freezer for about 15 minutes, until the frosting is firm.
- Drizzle passion fruit dessert sauce over the set buttercream.
- Garnish with extra zest or edible flowers if desired.
