From BBQ pulled pork and cheesesteaks to BLTs and (controversially) hamburgers, there are a lot of sandwiches made and sold all over Georgia. But what is our signature sandwich?

The Takeout, a virtual platform for food news and reviews, sought to answer that question for each state. Here’s what we know:

What is the signature sandwich of Georgia?

The writers named pimento cheese as Georgia’s signature sandwich. Here’s what they had to say about it:

“The demand for pimentos — sweet Spanish peppers — for use in dips and spreads was so significant in the early 20th century that industrial cultivation and canning operations developed in Griffin, Georgia. After World War II, pimento cheese recipes started to disappear from domestic-themed magazines, but not in Georgia, where sandwiches made from homemade or canned pimento cheese spread (peppers, mayo, and shredded cheese) remain a regular part of life.”

One of the biggest events held in Georgia every year is The Masters in Augusta, and a staple of the event is the pimento cheese sandwich sold on the golf course. A recipe for it is in “Par 3 Tea Time at the Masters: Relaxed Entertaining Augusta, Georgia Style.”

You need 3 cups of shredded white cheddar cheese, 2 cups of shredded yellow sharp cheddar cheese, 4 ounces of crumbled blue cheese, 1 cup of shredded parmesan cheese, a 4-ounce jar of sliced pimentos drained, 1 cup of light mayo, and 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard. Combine them all in a food processor until smooth, cover and chill. Spread the mixture on white bread.
