We have to give a big thanks to Stephen Colbert for giving us insight into what the biggest stars like to eat. During his famous segment, “The Colbert Questionert,” the late-night host asks celebs some hard-hitting questions, including, “What is the best sandwich?”
We love getting these little insights into the real lives of our favorite celebrities, and their answers often vary wildly. The ever-so-clever Ryan Gosling said his favorite sandwich is the ice cream sandwich, actress Emily Blunt said her favorite (and one of mine, too) is the tasty Cubano, and New Yorker Meryl Streep stayed on brand, sharing that her favorite sandwich is pastrami on rye.
So when George Clooney was interviewed, we were eagerly awaiting his answer. Living on beautiful Lake Como, Italy, we figured it would be something like a porchetta, mortadella, or tramezzini. After all, we know that Clooney enjoys a fresh Margherita pizza every week. But apart from his weekly Italian cravings, his favorite sandwich turned out to be an American classic with lots of good fixings.
George Clooney Loves This American Classic Sandwich
Turns out, when George Clooney isn’t living it up in the Mediterranean, he chows down on a simple sandwich of ham, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on toasted potato bread. When Clooney answered the question, Colbert noted that it’s very similar to Tom Hanks’ sandwich of choice—ham and Swiss with lettuce and mustard. Unlike Clooney, Hanks takes his without tomato.
A ham sandwich is a quintessentially classic option. We like ours with a bit of cheese, particularly Swiss or Brie. Mustard is a great addition as well, offering a piquant taste to every bite. Tasty slices of potato bread elevate the whole sandwich and effortlessly transform it into something special, especially if you make it for an everyday pick-me-up.
In the “Questionert,” we also learned that Clooney would choose apples over oranges, that he loves the “Die Hard” action movie franchise, and that his favorite smell is lavender—what else could we possibly want to know? We’re grateful Colbert is always digging deep to get the real 411 from our favorite celebs.
