I’m absolutely never surprised to learn that my favorite celebrities are particular about what they eat because so am I. Just like the Oscar winners, athletes, and pop stars, my go-to recipes are down to a science.
However, what does surprise me is just how many of those celebrities have a special tuna salad recipe. Tuna itself can be divisive, yet everyone has a signature tuna salad, from Stanley Tucci to Steve Martin & Martin Short to Matthew McConaughey.
Recently, I discovered that another Hollywood icon loves to whip up tuna salad at home—and her opinions are very strong. Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award-winning actress Bette Midler adores this quick, seven-ingredient tuna salad.
Bette Midler’s Tuna Salad Recipe
Midler is that girl any time of year, whether you’re belting out “Hello, Dolly!” or rewatching “The First Wives Club,” however, the star seems to grace most TV sets during the fall, in her famous role as Winifred Sanderson in Disney’s “Hocus Pocus” and “Hocus Pocus 2,” as well as the voice behind Grandma in the animated “The Addams Family” and “The Addams Family 2.”
So, if you’re looking for an easy meal that will put a spell on you as much as Midler’s iconic performances, look no further than the legend’s own tuna salad recipe.
Midler shared how she makes her go-to tuna salad in an interview with Good Housekeeping in 2000, saying the seven-ingredient meal was one of her favorite recipes. And as with many celebs, Midler is very particular about her ingredients.
“For starters, you have to use tuna in oil. Screw this tuna-in-water stuff,” Midler said.
Then, Midler nearly follows our Tuna Egg Sandwich recipe to the letter. She combines the canned tuna with one crumbled hard-boiled egg, celery, “a tiny, tiny bit” of chopped onion “if you have a taste for it,” two types of chopped pickles (sweet gherkins and dill), salt, pepper, and mayo. Midler specifies that she uses Hellmann’s mayonnaise, unless she has Blue Plate, “which I buy in New Orleans,” she said.
Midler didn’t say if she eats her tuna salad as a sandwich (like so many celebs do), with crackers, or even as-is with a fork. No matter how she consumes the tuna-egg salad, however, it sounds like the perfect blend of flavors that we’ll be craving as soon as the last bite is gone.
